New: Smart Scheduling — Stop Driving In Circles, Start Booking An Extra Job A Day

    •6 min read•Feature Updates

You're not slow. Your day plan is. Today we're shipping Smart Scheduling in Job Management — a quietly powerful change that gives you back the hour or two you lose to bad routing every single day.

Tradie reviewing the day's optimised job route on a tablet, with map and Smart Scheduling stats

    First, the uncomfortable maths

You're losing one to two hours a day — not to bad work, but to bad routing. That's a job a day. Every day. Forever.

Run the numbers and it stings: roughly 250 hours a year per van sitting in traffic, watching the same suburbs blur past for the third time that morning. That's about 30 jobs a year you already could've done. Plus the fuel. Plus the overtime. Plus the mate who quits because your day never bloody ends on time.

How you got here (a tragedy in five acts):

    • Phone rings. Whoever calls first gets your 9am slot.
    • Next caller gets 11am, on the other side of town.
    • 1pm? You're back where you started this morning.
    • Your van zig-zags across the city like a confused bee. Fuel light blinks.
    • By 4pm you're behind, and you're about to miss the next episode of Yellowstone. Again.

Each booking makes sense one job at a time. As a day, it's chaos.

The shift: not every job needs a 9:00 sharp

Here's the bit nobody tells you: most customers don't actually want 9:00 sharp. Ask them and a fair chunk will happily say "any time Tuesday morning is fine, mate." Those are flexible jobs.

The trick isn't to schedule harder. It's to separate the jobs that must happen at a specific time from the ones that just need to happen that day.

    Introducing Smart Scheduling

Every job in your Chime Labs calendar now has a single, brilliant little toggle: fixed or flexible.

    Fixed jobs

Locked to a time. You promised the customer 2pm Thursday — they get 2pm Thursday. These never move. Ever. Sacred.

    Flexible jobs

Must happen, but the time's open. We quietly slot them around your fixed ones, in geographic order, so your day actually flows.

How it works under the bonnet

Auto-reorder arranges your flexible jobs around your fixed bookings, by location, so your day stops zig-zagging.
Map view shows your day's route at a glance — no more guessing whether it makes sense.
Drop-in re-planning — emergency callout lands? Cancellation? Your flexible jobs re-slot automatically. You don't touch a thing.
Weekly view groups similar jobs by area, so your whole week reads like a sensible plan instead of a Where's Wally puzzle.

What changes for you on Monday morning

Same crew. Same trucks. Same hours. Just a day plan that respects both your customer commitments and your travel time.

    +1

extra job a day, on average

    −90 min

less time in your van per day

    ~5pm

days that actually finish on time

Fewer "sorry, running late" texts. Less fuel. Earlier finishes. More revenue from the same week. A schedule that runs your business — instead of the other way around.

"Yeah but…" — the questions you're already thinking

"What if a fixed job gets shifted?"

It doesn't. Fixed means fixed. Your customer commitments never move. The optimiser is only allowed to touch your flexible jobs.

"Do I have to re-plan everything manually?"

No. Your flexible jobs reorder when you tell us to reorder, and you review the new plan before anything is locked. You stay in charge.

"What about when an emergency lands at 11am?"

Drop it in. Your flexible jobs re-slot around it. The fixed ones stay put. Your day keeps moving.

"What if I mark everything as fixed?"

Then nothing optimises and you've built yourself a fancy spreadsheet. Be honest about which jobs really need an exact time — that's where your hours come back.
